What it Costs to Hire or Build an AI Agent in the UK
There is no single UK price for an AI agent. The cost follows the workflow, the systems it has to call, and whether you hire someone to build it or build it with your own team.
I'm Tony James, an applied AI and full-stack engineer in Milton Keynes. The published UK benchmarks stay on the hire guide. This page does not repeat them.
There is no single price
An AI agent is not a catalogue item with one price. A packaged product that already does the job is a different purchase from a workflow that has to call your own systems. Hiring a developer and building it inside your team are different again. This page describes what moves the cost. It does not list a rate.
The sourced UK figures already published on tony.codes live in How to hire an AI agent developer in the UK. That guide cites its sources. This page points there instead of copying the figures.
What moves the cost
These are the things that change the size of the work. None of them is a price.
- How many systems the agent must call, and whether those systems already have an API. - How clean and how accessible the records are. - How much the agent may do on its own, which is what makes testing and guardrails take longer. - Whether personal data is involved. The hire guide points at the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection for accountability and DPIAs. - Running costs after launch: model usage, hosting and monitoring. These sit on top of the build. - Whether your own team will own the code afterwards or a supplier will.
Hiring someone to build it
Hire when the agent has to act inside systems you already run and you want that workflow handed over with tests. The usual shapes are a short discovery piece, a fixed-scope build, or someone embedded with your team. An employee makes sense once your own team will own the agent every week. The questions to ask, the red flags, and the published benchmarks are in the hire guide.
How I take on a scoped build is on the AI agents service page.
Building it in your own team
Building it yourself is not free. Your team still spends time on integration, tests, and the failures that show up with real users. You still pay model usage, hosting and monitoring after launch. Those costs do not vanish because the developer is already on the payroll.
Buy a packaged product when it already does the job. Build in-house when your own team will own the system week to week. Hire when you want a defined workflow handed over and you do not have that capacity.
What a quote should cover
Ask for the workflow, the systems the agent may call, what it must not do, the tests, who owns the code, and a running-cost estimate for your volume. Running costs are separate from the build. A quote that names none of these is not comparable with one that does.
Where to start
Write down one workflow, the systems it touches, and what a good outcome looks like. That brief is what makes quotes comparable.
Send it through the enquiry form. Charities can apply for at-cost work. Rates are not published on this page. The quote follows the scope.
FAQ
How much does it cost to hire an AI agent developer in the UK? There is no single figure on this page. Cost follows the scope: which systems the agent must call, how ready your data is, how much it may do on its own, compliance, and running costs after launch. The hire guide points at the published UK sources. A quote is written after the scope is clear.
Is it cheaper to build an AI agent yourself? Not by default. An in-house build still needs engineering time, access to your systems, tests, and ongoing model and hosting costs. Hire for a defined workflow you want handed over. Build in-house when your own team will own it. Buy a packaged product when it already does the job.
Do you publish a price for this work? No. Rates are not published. The quote is scope-dependent. Use the enquiry form. Charities can apply for at-cost work.
What should the quote include? The workflow, the systems it may call, what it must not do, the tests, who owns the code, and a running-cost estimate for your volume. Running costs are separate from the build.

The AI agents service page describes a scoped quote. It does not add a price.
